How much do sound design and a film mix cost?
In short: There is no single price for sound design and the mix — the cost depends on the length of the material, the format (stereo or 5.1), the complexity of the sound world and the number of revisions. That is why we do not publish a fixed price list but prepare an individual quote once you send the material and we review it. As a rough guide, a short advertisement starts from a few thousand złoty, while feature films are quoted separately.
“How much do sound design and the mix cost?” is one of the most common questions we hear. There is no single answer, because two seemingly similar productions can differ several-fold in the effort involved. Below we explain what really affects the price and what quoting sound post-production looks like.
What affects the price of sound design and the mix?
Length of the material
The basic factor. A 30-second spot is a different amount of work than a half-hour documentary or a feature film. The longer the material, the more scenes there are to add sound to and mix.
Complexity of the sound world
The key variable for sound design . A static conversation scene requires a few sounds, while an action sequence or a fantasy scene requires dozens of layers designed from scratch. The richer and more unreal the world, the more work involved.
Mix format — stereo or 5.1
A mix in 5.1 is more labour-intensive than stereo, because it requires placing the sound in space and working in a 5.1 studio with controlled acoustics. The target format (cinema, TV, online) therefore directly affects the cost.
Number of revisions and versions
Every round of notes, plus additional language versions or formats, increases the workload. It is worth agreeing up front how many rounds of revisions the quote covers.
Music
If a project requires an original score, music production is added. Using library music is cheaper than a bespoke composition.
Rough price ranges
The figures below are approximate — we quote every project individually after reviewing the material:
- Short advertisement / spot (up to ~60 s) — usually from a few thousand złoty, depending on the scope of sound design.
- Corporate film / documentary (a few to a dozen or so minutes) — quoted by length and complexity.
- Animation — often more expensive, because the entire sound layer is created from scratch.
- Feature film / series — quoted individually, taking into account weeks of work and the 5.1 format.
We do not publish a fixed price list, because a reliable figure can only be given after viewing the material. We also describe the general cost context of the whole process in the article on what sound post-production is .
Sound design and the mix — separately or together?
In many projects sound design and the mix are treated as two stages of a single process, which can be beneficial organizationally and cost-wise. Sound design creates and selects sounds, while the mix combines them with dialogue and music into a coherent whole — if the same team handles both stages, the transition between them is smooth and responsibility for the final result rests in one place. They can, however, be separated, for example when sound design is done with us and the material goes to an external mix, or vice versa. Then we quote each stage separately according to its scope. We explain the relationship between combining layers and finalizing them in the article on mix vs mastering .
What not to skimp on
With a tight budget it can be tempting to cut sound costs, but some savings come back to haunt the final result. Dialogue intelligibility is the absolute foundation — a viewer will forgive more modest sound design, but will not forgive unintelligible lines. Controlled monitoring is the second thing you cannot skip: a mix done “on headphones” without an acoustically prepared control room can sound completely different in a cinema or on television. The third is time — haste at the mixing stage almost always shows in the result. It is better to narrow the scope of sound design to the key scenes than to skimp on the quality of the whole track.
Why invest in professional sound?
- Quality — a 5.1 studio, Eve Audio and Genelec monitors, an Avid S1 console and Pro Tools Ultimate are conditions that cannot be reproduced on ordinary equipment.
- Experience — dialogue editing, ADR and sound editing are handled by Olga (collaboration with Nicolas Becker; ADR and dialogue editing on Lupin, Infiniti, 80 Days), and the mix by Yohan.
- References — we have delivered sound for projects for Netflix, Prime Video, BBC and France TV.
- Comprehensiveness — sound design, mix, voice recording and music are all handled in one studio.
How to prepare for a quote
Send us the edited material (or a description of it): length, target format and platform, the expected scope of sound design, and whether music and language localization are needed. On this basis we will prepare a specific, approximate quote.
Summary
The cost of sound design and the mix is the resultant of the length of the material, the complexity of the sound world, the mix format and the number of revisions. Rather than guessing from a price list, it is best to send the material — then we will give a real figure tailored to the project.

Frequently asked questions
How much do sound design and a film mix cost?
The price depends on the length of the material, the mix format (stereo or 5.1), the number of scenes requiring sound design and the number of revisions. As a rough guide, a short advertisement starts from a few thousand złoty, while feature films are quoted individually after viewing the material.
What does the price of sound design depend on?
The most important factors are the length of the material, the complexity of the sound world, the number of effects designed from scratch, the mix format, and the number of versions and revisions. A simple product advertisement costs less than an action scene requiring dozens of sound layers.
Are sound design and the mix quoted separately?
We usually treat them as stages of a single post-production process, but they can be separated in the quote. Sound design creates and selects sounds, while the mix combines all the layers into a whole — the cost of each stage depends on the scope of the work.
How much does a 5.1 mix cost?
A 5.1 mix is more labour-intensive than stereo, because it requires placing the sound in space and working in a 5.1 studio. This raises the cost relative to a stereo mix. We give the exact figure after reviewing the material.
How do I get a quote for sound post-production?
It is best to send the edited material or a description of it: length, format, the scope of sound design needed and the target platform. On this basis we will prepare a specific, approximate quote. We quote every project individually.
Do you have a fixed price list for sound design?
No, we do not publish a fixed price list, because two similar productions can differ several-fold in the effort involved. We give a reliable figure only after viewing the edited material — that way the quote reflects the real scope of the work.
How long does sound design and the mix take?
It depends on the length and complexity of the material. A short advertisement usually takes a few days, while a feature film or series can take several weeks, including rounds of revisions. We set the exact timeline together with the quote, after viewing the material.
